Fort Myers is a gateway to the Southwest Florida region and a major tourist destination within Florida. The winter estates of Thomas Edison ("Seminole Lodge") and Henry Ford ("The Mangoes") are major attractions. Fort Myers is widely recognized and consistently ranked as one of the nation’s top destinations for beach combing, shelling, kayaking and bird watching. For 15 miles, Fort Myers’ McGregor Boulevard is lined on both sides with statuesque royal palm trees, the first 200 of which were imported from Cuba and planted by Thomas Edison. Fort Myers is close to several beaches including those on Sanibel, Captiva, Lovers Key and Fort Myers Beach. Fort Myers Beach is a town on Estero Island with 7miles of beach that faces the Gulf of Mexico. Times Square is a favorite destination for many beach goers there for it's tourist shops, restaurants, entertainment and fun. It is known for breathtaking sunsets!
